Premium Cataract Services
Dr. O’Neal and Cary Eye Center are now offering the latest, cutting-edge technologies associated with cataract surgery at WakeMed Cary Hospital. These new technologies are not appropriate for every patient, but may improve outcomes in select patients. The services listed here are not covered by insurance and so they are “out-of-pocket” expenses. But, you are investing in your eye health and vision. Dr. O’Neal can discuss which of these options, if any, may be appropriate for you.
Laser Cataract Surgery
Several incisions are made during cataract surgery in order to access and remove the cataract from the eye. These incisions are traditionally made with a microsurgical blade. Now, these incisions can be made using a femtosecond laser, which may offer slightly more precision. Your eye must meet certain requirements in order to be considered a good candidate for this procedure. Talk to Dr. O’Neal to see if this is a good choice for you.
Toric Implant
After removing the cataract, an implant or intraocular lens is inserted into the eye to help the eye focus. While the standard implants can be selected to minimize the amount of near-sightedness or far-sightedness, they do not correct for astigmatism. For patients that have a moderate or high amount of regular corneal astigmatism, the toric implant may be a good choice and will significantly reduce the amount of postoperative astigmatism.
Multifocal (bifocal) Implant
For those patients who wish to reduce their dependency on glasses for both near and far vision, meet certain requirements to be considered an appropriate candidate, and would not be bothered by some mild blurring of vision and possible halos, the multifocal implant may be a good choice. This type of implant has been available for a number of years and the newer versions perform better than the older versions.

I recently had occasion to meet Dr. O’Neal, under rather inauspicious circumstances. While performing a home improvement project, I sustained a fairly serious injury to my left eye, requiring a visit to the emergency room. Fortunately for me and for the future of that eye, Dr. O’Neal was on call that day. His swift care, attention, and great competence resulted in the best possible outcome in an otherwise doubtful situation. Moreover, his obvious concern for my well-being and clear explanation of the circumstances attendant to the injury (I, being a layman) allowed a scary situation to feel less so. He has a new patient in me and my family, and I couldn’t more enthusiastically recommend him to anyone in search of a great eye-care provider.

When I first started seeing him, my eyes were a mess… Working with Dr. O’Neal, he was able to systematically diagnose the issues and treat them. My eyes have never felt better!
